I don't see a problem with it. Hello's are fine in here; it's an introductory thread; quite literally for people to just say 'hi' and be welcomed; generally just a brief greeting. If members want a lengthy discussion then by all means create a new thread as and where it is appropriate but if new members want to just say hello in here then it's fine, of course having a long thread about nothing in particular is pointless so it stands to reason that a quick 'howdy' should have an appropriate place to go: in here.
